I recently spoke at a financial literacy event for college students and listened as the speakers — respected financial experts — discussed the necessity of credit and how important it is for young people to build up their FICO scores.

I don’t agree with this. I think it’s dangerously bad advice, and it actually terrifies me that it’s the conventional wisdom propagated in what passes for unbiased financial literacy training for young people.

An undertow of the current health care debate has been the suspicion that working Americans will be forced to cover the cost of health care for deadbeats who decline to work and pay for their own. I thought it would be interesting to look, state by state, at just how many people 16 years of age or older are actually in the work force as defined by the census bureau, i.e., working outside of the home or actively looking.

Bank of America is no stranger to legal problems — shareholder lawsuits, SEC lawsuits, FBI investigations, etc. — but the latest suit filed against the company is demanding the largest sum yet.

Dalton Chiscolm sued the bank in August, demanding “1.784 billion, trillion dollars” on top of an additional $200,164,000.

As banks and credit card companies race to raise rates and fees on credit card holders, they are angering not only the public, but also the Congress.
