In 2002, voters of California passed a law mandating that HMOs, which serve nearly 21 million people in California, offer more timely access to medical care. Now the California Department of Managed Health Care finally is ready to implement those new rules, to be unveiled Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to a story in today’s Los Angeles Times. California says it is the first state to set time standards for HMOs.

The landscape of refinancing has changed dramatically in recent months, but the reason for doing it remains largely the same. “It was about the dollars,” says Owen Metz, 26, of Plymouth, Minn., who dropped his monthly payments by $150 when he refinanced earlier this month. “Anytime I can save money now — it’s almost a no-brainer.”

While people used to always pay their mortgage first before other bills, priorities have definitely changed for some. Maintaining car payments appears to be the first priority, with credit cards second and mortgages last. That’s the results of the third quarter trend data from TransUnion. The 60-day delinquency national average for auto loans was 0.81%. Credit cards national 90-day delinquency average was just a bit higher at 1.10%. Mortgages national 60-day delinquency rate was six times higher at 6.25%

poker handA recent study by a Cornell graduate student found that, contrary to what common sense would suggest, online poker players win less money when they win more hands.

Sociology doctoral student Kyle Siler analyzed 27 million online hands of six-player no-limits Texas Hold’em and found that those who win multiple times usually win smaller pots, and this causes them to undervalue the damage caused by the occasional, bigger losses.
